Woohoo! Hats off to you for rockin’ the female entrepreneur thing.
I personally believe that being a female entrepreneur is the best opportunity right now for women to create their own personal economy. In fact, I think it is critical for women to step up and design the life they want for themselves through entrepreneurship.
Think about it. When designed correctly, you get to set your hours around your life (kids soccer, dance recital, family dinner, etc.). You get to call the shots about what you will and will not tolerate in your business. But most of all you get to pursue your dreams and your passions for financial independence and freedom.
That’s the fun part of being a female entrepreneur, and it’s exciting. But as my friend Ann likes to say, running your own business can be a real MOFO.
Yes, when you are focused and diligent about making your dreams a reality and your business profitable, it takes hard work and lots of it. There are so many moving parts to being an entrepreneur and that means things tend to get pretty stressful.
When you are the leader, you’re the one in charge of making sure everything is working. This typically means late nights, money concerns, client issues… the list can get humongous. And if you’re not careful these varmints can lead to over-drive and even hyperdrive, which produces more stress, pressure, and anxiety rather than productivity and results.
So, when you start noticing your focus is all on the stressful elements of owning your own business, it’s time to play hooky.
Yes, hooky! Remember when you were in high school and you played hooky? Man, good times! Not that you did it often, but there were those occasional days that resembled the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Same thing here in business.
Why you ask? Well in the infamous words of Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
So if you are experiencing any of these 7 signs, get to planning that hooky day for yourself. And if things have gone from over-drive to hyperdrive, you may need to plan more than just one.
1. You’ve lost your sense of purpose
A serious sign that you need a day or more away from your business is when you start to lose perspective of why you’re in business in the first place. When every day gets to the point where you can’t see the forest for the trees or you don’t remember why you are doing what you are doing as an entrepreneur, you need to schedule a break from your daily grind so you can regain your purpose and the passion for your business.
2. You are making unhealthy decisions
Any signs that indicate that your health is being affected based on the decisions you are making are obvious red flags that it’s time to take a break from your day-to-day operations. When you rely on coffee, sugary snacks, and fast food as your source of energy, your mind, body, and spirit suffer. Regularly using alcohol as a coping mechanism may be a result of too much stress at work. When your decision is to reach for a glass of wine as soon as you leave the office this can signal you need to shake things up and shake things off to regain your focus.
3. Your personal life is suffering
When you are solely focused on your business and you forget about family and friends, be watchful. If you find yourself having missed too many family dinners, soccer games, getting together with friends, or family outings, it could be a clue that you need to reconnect with your family and friends. Never fly solo when it comes to building your business. You need a support system. Consider making your hooky day doubly fun by asking a friend to play hooky with you.
4. Work isn’t inspiring anymore
When you started your business, you were passionate about your work. You had a fire in your belly that no one could put out! But when that zeal starts to be less than stellar, you work suffers as a result. If you are no longer excited to get into work on a Monday morning as you once were, or you dread getting started with your work activity, you probably need a hooky day.
5. You’ve lost your sense of humor
All work and no humor make the female entrepreneur irritable. When you find yourself not laughing as easily as you once did, or you find it hard to keep a sense of humor when you encounter challenging work situations, this is a sign you need a break. Let’s face it, entrepreneurship is a long journey and if you can’t laugh along the way, it may be time to get out the game while you still can. OK, maybe that’s a bit dramatic… play hooky for a day.
6. You are turning molehills into mountains
When you’re in a good place mentally and emotionally, you can handle the daily curveballs that come with the entrepreneurial package. But if you’re overly stressed, forget your curveballs – people around you are now playing dodgeball. If every little thing your are encountering is becoming like an insurmountable mountain, then it’s time for a recheck. Have your lost your perspective? Are things that you used to easily shrug off now permanently attached to you? Have you become the micro-manager versus the manager who effectively handles things? If your molehills have turned into mountains, it is a signed that you need to step out and recalibrate.
7. You have trouble sleeping
Excessive stress from work can increase the chances of you having trouble sleeping. Are you tossing and turning at night, thinking about all the things you didn’t get done and need to do tomorrow? Does fear and concern about customers or your finances lead to a lack of sleep? Without proper rest, not only do you suffer but your business suffers as well. If you aren’t sleeping well this is a sign that you need a break so your can clear your head and take care of your self.
Not taking needful time away from the business is a common problem for the female entrepreneur. It has been noted that 61% of small business owners overall take less than one week per year away from their business. Just imagine the portion of this percentage that is female entrepreneurs. Hmmm.
Remember, you work hard as an entrepreneur, and yes you deserve a day or more out of the office to relax, decompress, refresh your mind or simply just to have some fun for Christ’s sake. That’s one of the reasons you became an entrepreneur, isn’t it? To be the boss so you could have control over your time and schedule. Well, it’s time to take it!
