Do you know what the number one fear is among female entrepreneurs? The number one fear that tops the list?
Well, here it is. The number one fear that most female entrepreneurs have is THE FEAR OF FAILURE.
Yep. Fear of failure is at the very top of the “concerns” list for female entrepreneurs, and more so than our male counterparts. Not that this a competition, but it is something to get present to so you can squash it.
Get this. Not only do females have a greater fear of failing at being a business owner, they are also more likely to diminish their perceptions of their own entrepreneurial capabilities, more so than their male counterparts.
Now that just downright just stinks, doesn’t?
Especially when you consider the fact that female entrepreneurs have such a unique brilliance in what they do as entrepreneurs, more so than their male counterparts do. You unique brilliance shows up in ways like being compassionate, being authentic in service to others, being a wife, mother, and caregiver – all rolled into one – and being resilient with the fortitude and stamina to build a business that fits how you work.
I think about Mary Kay Ash and how she built her cosmetic empire by helping women build theirs – brilliant!
Well, no matter where you are in this entrepreneurial game, you’re going to have to feel the fear and do it anyway. You’re going to have to become a fearless female entrepreneur if you want to make it to that 6-7 figure money zone. And here’s the kicker. No matter what level you are there are new devils that come with every level of success you will experience. Just know that for a fact and get over it quickly.
So if you are ready to become the best fearless female entrepreneur – ever, follow these 7 steps to manage your fears, grow from your experiences, and build your entrepreneurial empire.
Step 1: Assess Where You Are Right Now
If you had to guess, how far off course would you say are you right now from having what you want? Here’s your opportunity to find out. Start by making a list of what you truly desire. If after comparing the list of what you truly desire does not look like the life you have now, then the next step is to take an assessment of where you are now and where you want to be in order to see how wide the gap is. This is the beginning of knowing what actions you will need to take to reach your goal. Bold desires require bold moves.
Step 2: Be Decisive About What Matters to You
What does your life look like in a perfect world? Don’t get all dramatic and start giving excuses for why your life doesn’t look like what you had hoped. Just paint a picture of it in your mind in broad brush strokes, pulling together those elements that best represent your ideal life. If you need to create a vision board to stir up your imagination and senses, then start cutting out the pictures you’re attracted to. Also, start acting like it’s yours already. For instance, if you are a business owner start acting like someone who owns her business. Stop waiting for permission or recognition from others in order to feel entitled to your success. OWN IT!
Step 3: Acknowledge and Challenge Your Fears
Examine your ABC’s… your attitudes, beliefs, and cognitions (which are your thoughts and thought pattern). Then go deeper to find the fears that drive them. Once you have identified your “fear demons,” it will be easier to spot them in your decision-making (which by the way is the next step). Ask yourself whether you have accepted irrational and false fears as your personal truths. Are you harboring fears that have no concrete basis for their existence? Like, if you were to share your dreams and goals openly with others you may not get the support you need or that you’ll lose your relationships? These types of thoughts impact every choice you make, and they won’t budge unless you challenge them openly and honestly. This will take bravery and courage. But do it anyway. Face Everything And Rise!
Step 4: Put a Stake in the Ground and Make a Decision
A prerequisite to being a fearless female entrepreneur is your ability to fine tune your decision-making abilities. Be comfortable making decisions with less than perfect information. This means having more than a casual commitment to what you say you want to see happen in your life. When you put a stake in the ground, it is more than a passing fancy or casual commitment. When you actually put a stake in the ground, it means that you have made a decision that has been made from the heart with a powerful emotional commitment towards getting what you want. Don’t settle for anything less. Make a decision.
Step 5: You Got To Make It Happen
Get out of ‘paralysis by analysis’ in order to make things happen. Start asking yourself “How can I make this happen?” You see, the difference between dreams and goals is a timeline and an action plan. Just because you say you want something does not make it an automatic delivery. You’ve got to take action to make it happen. For example, if you have dreamed of leaving the bone-shaking Chicago winters behind in December and head to the sunny shores of California to write your book by Christmas, what are you doing right now to make it happen? How could you make this happen? Are you online in your spare time looking for the sunny spots in California in December, are you identifying a good real estate agent and maybe checking out some meet-ups for authors? Are you working up your financial plan to free up the cash to make this happen? It’s totally within your power to do it. Take time to understand what is important to you, set goals and put a plan in place to reach them.
Step 6: If You’re Stuck – Get Help
Let’s keep this one simple. There are a lot of resources out there to help you. Start with informal options like a trusted friend, colleague or partner. If that isn’t enough, seek out a mentor or coach who can help you identify and work through your fears and help you stay on top of your goals and desires.
Step 7: Answer 7 Questions to Get Started
- What do you need to do before you do anything else?
- What specifically have you done so far?
- What would your best friend advise you to do?
- What would you advise your best friend to do if they were in your situation?
- What research could you do to help you identify your first step?
- What is one action you can take in the next 15 minutes?
- How will you reward yourself when you complete your actions?
Once you got the answer to this question: take fearless action immediately.
Becoming a fearless female entrepreneur is within you. It is up to you to find the strength and ways to better use your brilliant energy other than expending it on being afraid. The amount of emotional energy that resides in your fears is tremendous.
